201 CMR 17.00 Certification Webinar

IT’S THE LAW....Massachusetts has introduced a tough new data protection law designed to prevent security breaches and identity theft. Any business or state entity that handles Massachusetts residents’ personal information is subject to this law. What is Personal Information (PI)? Personal Information is defined as a Massachusetts resident’s first and last name, or first initial and last name, along with one or more of the following:

1. Social Security Number
2. Driver’s license number or state–issued identification card number
3. Financial Account Number
4. Credit or Debit Card Number

What happens if you don’t comply? A civil penalty of $5000 may be levied for each violation of M.G.L. 93H CMR 17.00. In addition, under the portion of M.G.L. 93I concerning data disposal, businesses can be subject to a fine of up to $50,000 for each instance of improper disposal.
