March, 2007
The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) maintains responsibility for the permit testing services throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Since the current ATS permit testing equipment was
aged beyond the feasibility of an upgrade path or repair, the RMV decided to replace all ATS permit testing kiosks throughout the 37 branches of the RMV. The immediate benefit to the RMV included equipment
with increased reliability and faster speed. It was critical for the RMV to depend upon well-functioning equipment to help effectively manage this service to the public.
RetroFit and the RMV have an established partnership in which RetroFit has been supporting the RMV's infrastructure since 2000. RetroFit has been a long-term partner with the Registry in the development,
implementation, upgrading and life-cycle management of the RMV's Thin-Client environment. In addition, RetroFit has provided outstanding support and maintenance for the equipment located throughout the
Registry's branches. Due to our exceptional understanding of the RMV's operations, RetroFit was chosen to provide the ATS solution. Our understanding of the RMV made us exclusively qualified to carry out
this project.
RetroFit had the advantage of providing the Registry with "one-stop shopping" - from the development of the state-of-the-art kiosk, to the installation and removal of existing equipment and finally, to the
support and maintenance of the newly installed equipment. RetroFit proposed a best-value solution that incorporated the required technology products and related services needed to entirely replace all permit
testing kiosks throughout the RMV enterprise.
RetroFit identified the necessary hardware that would best meet and support the RMV's efforts to replace the aging ATS equipment in the branch offices. There were three (3) components to the ATS station that
RetroFit proposed: touch-screen monitor, thin-client device and customized public accessed kiosk. Through evaluation and testing, RetroFit identified and procured the best solution to meet the demanding
needs of the RMV
Understanding that the RMV had unique needs, RetroFit manufactured a customized kiosk solution for the RMV. What differentiated RetroFit's solution from standardized kiosks available in the marketplace was
that the RMV had the opportunity for input into the final design to ensure that this solution met all of RMV's needs and expectations. In addition, this customization allowed RetroFit to create a special
housing for the touch screen monitor that will protect and increase its life expectancy in the field.
Once the kiosk design was developed and procured by RetroFit, the next phase of the project was to successfully deploy the project to the RMV's branch offices. RMV chose RetroFit for this because of our long
history of experience in deployments. RetroFit used our strategy of a multi-phase project plan that included the planning, deployment of new kiosks to the branches and the removal of the old equipment.
